Great Day for our U10 boys and U11 Girls

Great Day for our U10 boys and U11 Girls

Martin Mochan22 Feb 2015 - 16:26

Brilliant performance by our 4 teams at today's mini tournament

Another great ELA event at Mellor today with 3 Mellor teams in the 8 team U10 event and a girls team taking on Liverpool in the afternoon.

We always thought the weather would catch up with us today - and it did but couldn't stop our new U11 girls team putting in a great effort against a strong physical team from Liverpool. Unfortunately this proved to be the only girls game as 2 other sides failed to attend but well done to our hardy team for playing in terrible conditions.

The day started well and Andy Liles and John Howie led Mellor White and Red with squads made up of debutants from our new intermediate section. No, the results didnt go our way but we were playing teams that have been on the circuit for a while and the boys held their own in all of the 6 games that the played.

Great overall play by Josh Myers who seemed to adapt really well to contact lacrosse as well as Jake Fell who, with great speed, scored an excellent goal against the giants from Liverpool!. Size didn't deter our boys with Archie Netley and Finn Howie looking increasingly comfortable with the adapted rules. James Smith and James Kennedy played with real composure, finding space and creating chances when they came our way and in goal, Robbie Wilson pulled off some fine saves. Will Hodgson, playing a central defensive position looked like a chip off the old block - one to watch in the next few years.

There's no doubt that this is the start of something great for the boys and we saw today the basis for a very credible Under 12 team next season - well done boys.

Over on pitch 1, our old timers ( if you can call 8 & 9 old!) led the line for the club in some fiercely competitive games. Initially facing Cheadle and conceding our customary early goal the boys went on to secure 4 - 1 victory. Playing Timperley next, Rick played around with the team with a standout moment for Keiran Reid as he fired home a pass from Jamie for his first competitive goal. Alex & Joey were solid in defence but reacted well to playing in midfield whilst Ollie and jack led the line - Jack in particular buoyed by his first season goal yesterday.

But as is so often the case it came down to a game against our old rivals Stockport which, with the snow driving in, proved to be the tournament finale. Stcokport had beaten everyone in their games and were definitely looking to leave unbeaten. Jamie Mochan fired us into an early lead with a fine solo goal before an equaliser pegged us back at half time. Ned, in goal, showed no sign of injury and played with real bravery in goal. George, as ever, played beyond his years and, with the clock ticking Ollie Hague fired home what would prove to be the winner - a great end to a great morning.

A great day for Junior Lacrosse and a massive thanks to Mark, Ged and Rick for helping to sort out the pitches, Andy & John for leading the new teams and all of the parents for helping wherever needed - from kitchen to car-park - without everyone mucking in these events dont work but today was a good one for all the kids. And finally to Stephen Wright for umpiring the girls game and Jay Learner & Ollie Robinson for refereeing all of the boys games - its great to see our older boys coming back to help with the younger players - your help is really appreciated.
